Mold and Mildew are common problems in bathrooms especially in the shower areas. Mold is a fungi and can be identified by color either pink, brown or black and can cover the surface of the tile it is growing on.  Dealing with surface mold and mildew is important.  Mold and mildew are the result of moisture due to lack of ventilation, humidity and poor lighting.  If left can pose a hazard to you and your family.

The most common causes of mold and mildew are:

  • Low circulation of air
  • Poor lighting or low lighting
  • Warm environments
  • High humidity
  • Damp areas

Cleaning: Clean surface with 1 part chlorine bleach to 5 parts water.  Apply with spray bottle or sponge on surface, rinse and dry thoroughly.  This cleaning will kill all surface bacteria however mold and mildew in grout is not so easily removed. Grout is porous unlike ceramic tile so while this cleans surface mold, mold in grout may still be there and will continue to return.  Mold also may leave a residual stain if it has been there for a long time.  It may be necessary to have your grout cleaned thoroughly by us. We will remove all moldy silicone and caulking and replace it with mold resistant caulking.  In some cases to remove residual staining grout must be mined out and replaced.

What to do to limit mold and mildew :  There are a few things you can do on a regular basis to reduce mold and mildew.

- Air circulation - turn on vent immediately after a shower or bath, if possible open a window for increased circulation.

-wipe down surface area to make sure it is dry

- leave light on for at least 15 - 20 minutes after bath or shower

How do I care for my floor after it has been cleaned by Trident HSR?

After your initial restorative cleaning with us here are our recommendations for your floor care.

-Vacuum regularly removing any debris from your floors using soft bristle brush

-wipe up spills immediately

-clean with mild liquid soap (not detergent)  and water,

-rinse well with clean water

-dry thoroughly

Note:

Do not use any cleaner on floor that  is not recommended for it. Grout is less durable than ceramic tile and this product may not be right for the tile and the grout. Do not use products containing wax or oil. Cleaners should be non-acidic and non-alkaline.

We highly recommend that floors be sealed directly after we clean them. Seal allows floors added protection and gives you a bit of time to get to spills on the floor.

Should I seal my floors?

There are a few reasons you should seal your floors.  One is to keep them clean the other is aesthetic.  The top picture is a tile that has just been cleaned. The picture below it is of the same tile after it was sealed with a satin finish.

Seal can take a tile from dull to high gloss. Depending on the look you like seals come in matte, satin and high gloss. Seal can also come in slip resistant formula.

Ceramic tile is coated when it is being manufactured and it is not necessary to seal the tile just the grout. You would seal the tile if you wanted a finish either satin or high gloss or to alter the surface of the tile i.e. slip resistant.

Natural Stone is porous and therefore you need to seal the tile and the grout. This will ensure the protection and cleanliness of the surface.

Sealing a floor is like putting a protective layer over it. It can protect your floor from staining and scratching. It also hermetically seals your floor preventing bacteria to sit in your grout. Grout if unsealed is always a breeding ground for bacteria and even regular cleaning will not get it out. The best option is to have your tile and grout cleaned with heat and high  pressure and seal immediately.
